It’s time for a new flash of flavour here on YourSauga, and that’s why our latest Restaurant Spotlight is focusing on a wonderful little Mexican eatery by the name of Border MX: Mexican Grill!
Mississauga is home to two different Border MX locations, one on Hurontario, and one in Streetsville, but today we’re going to be focusing on the latter.
Border MX in Streetsville is certainly a store that catches the eye when passing; it’s all-black exterior is reminiscent of Burrito Boys, but it’s orange flare and dragon decal on the wall are unmistakable. You’d be forgiven for thinking it was a tattoo studio! Once you walk inside however, it’s a very different story.
The interior design is simple but certainly evocative of Mexican culture. Brick and wood covered walls relay a feeling of tradition, which the hanging banners and Mexican flag adorning the bar certainly drives that home. The seating arrangements are made-up of black tables, with black and purple chairs, completing the sense of comfort and nonchalance.
It’s a nice setting but not one that will rock your socks. But hey, that’s the objective of the food! And below is the breakdown of the excellent menu curated by the head chef.
As the name may suggest, Border MX is all about Mexican cuisine. Before we break down the entire menu, we want to relay a little information about the chef, as per the website: “Our chef from Mexico City, got a training on culinary arts and she mixes knowledge with the recepies that have been passed down through many generations of her family.” That’s right, Border MX’s head chef is a lady by the name of Viri Rico, making this one of the truly few restaurants in the entire city that feature a female lead!
We’ll start with the simple, Chips and Dips section of the menu, which serves as the appetisers at Border MX. You can opt for the simple Chips and Dips option, which comes with salsa, guacamole, or beans and cheese, Bean Taquitos (deep fried corn taquitos, mild sauce, queso fresco, sour cream & guacamole), Street Corn (grilled corn on the cob, mayo, queso fresco & tajin peppers), Sopes (handmade tortilla’s, topped with beans, lettuce, queso fresco, & sour cream), or some classic Nachos.
Next up the Burrito options, the 12″ flour tortilla’s are stuffed with your choice of beans, rice, lettuce, pico de gallo, red or green sauce, queso fresco, or sour cream, and your choice of filling, be it ground beef, chicken, vegetables, chorizo, pork carnita’s, or pastor. As for other traditional options, there are Quesadilla, Flautas, Enchiladas, Burrito Bowls, and Chimichanga’s.
One of the specialities of Border MX however, are the amazing tacos. As pictured above, you get three pieces on a plate, and you can choose from classics like Ground Beef, Vegetarian, Chorizo, or Grilled Chicken. And then there are other taco options like Tacos de Res (slow cooked, shredded beef topped with avocado sauce, radish, and queso fresco), Chile Relleno (chorizo and cheese, stuffed with hot peppers, beans, sour cream, and salsa ranchera), Baja Fish Tacos (beer-battered fried fish, chipotle mayo, and citrus cilantro slaw), and Rico Shrimp (beer-battered fried shrimp, avocado sauce, and pineapple).
And finally, we arrive at the Speciality menu, and perhaps this is where Border MX really separates itself from the pack. Here you’ll find Conchita Pibil (Mayan seasoned pork, slow cooked, served with pickled onions, rice, and beans), Volcan (shredded beef, grilled chicken, chorizo, peppers, onions, rice, beans guacamole, tortilla’s, and corn, served in a molcajete volcano rock bowl), Evil Shrimp (shrimp cooked in a cheesy-creamy chipotle sauce, served with rice and crispy chips), and the Fajita Grill (juice meat, bell peppers, onions, with rice, and served with tortilla’s of lettuce, pico de gallo, cheese, and guacamole), among various other options. Some of the speciality options are for two people, and we can’t recommend the Volcan option enough, it’s one of the most unique meals you will find in all of Mississauga. You can ask for all the meat to be halal and wash it all down with a Corona!
What Others Are Saying
Mississauga is deservedly known as a melting pot of culture and cuisine. There’s just about every type of food available in our city, most of it in spades. However one that is, surprisingly, under-served is Mexican cuisine!
Thankfully, Border MX completely throws that out the window. You don’t need dozens of Mexican restaurants when you already have two of the same name, that provide some of the best such cuisine you’ll find north of the Mexican border! However, that’s just our opinion. What about the rest of Mississauga? Well, here’s a handful of reviews from Google Reviews, where Border MX holds an impressive 4.2 out of 5 stars rating!
Great Mexican food. Best tampiquenas I have tried out of Mexico really juicy and tender meat.
Excellent service. Place is operated by Mexicans so it give it the plus. Highly recommended. I was a bit scared of wait times as I read but in our visit everything came in average time.

Great food and atmosphere. Staff is very friendly. Variety of authentic dishes and some very good specialities. Oddly they don’t see fountain pop. Only Mexican pop which is fine but expensive. Considering there was no A.C. when I was there refills of iced tea would have been nice. Slightly made up for it with serving the water in old tequila bottles. Nice touch.

Some of the best food I’ve had hands down. Food is amazing and comes out quickly, but what makes this place special is the wonderful service from staff. They are passionate about their food and culture and wish to share it with us, and for that I am a returning customer. If you want authentic Mexican cuisine and culture, this is the place to be!

So ready to try more from you also I am waiting for Day of the dead to try your bread was told it is made on house just like little bakeshops in Mexico. Proud to see mexicans succeed and see mexican food is shown at its best , if you see hard shell tacos on a menu most likely they are not mexican folks…

Border MX hasn’t been in Mississauga for a long time, relatively speaking, but it has already won the award for Best Mexican Restaurant in the city! That’s no small feat. but it speaks to the high (and consistent) quality of the restaurant.
Streetsville and Hurontario play host to Border MX, one of the few places to find traditional and excellent Mexican food in all of Mississauga. The food here is truly fantastic and offers-up a unique dining experience, unlike any other in the city. You owe it to your taste buds to head to Border MX in the near future, and bask in the immense flavour palette and Mexican culture!
