Providing Boost for Transit Infrastructure
The Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Bob Chiarelli, Ontario Minister of Infrastructure, announced over $800 million in funding for Mississauga’s transit infrastructure.
“In order to ensure growing cities like Mississauga are able to break gridlock, get people moving, attract new investment, create jobs and improve our quality of life, we must work together to build the infrastructure our communities need to drive our economy forward,” said Mayor Bonnie Crombie. “The Canadian and Ontario economies are powered by municipal infrastructure and it’s important that cities like Mississauga are given the proper funding and tools to make investments where they are needed most. Today’s investment in our City of over $800 million, including matching funds from the Province and the City, over the next decade will keep Mississauga moving and demonstrates what can be achieved when all levels of government work together to strengthen our communities.”
Mississauga will receive $338,998,744 from the Government of Canada and $279,673,964 from the Government of Ontario over the next 10 years. The City will contribute $228,824,152, for a total of $847,496,860. The money will be used to fund the City’s plans for future expansion and maintenance of its transit infrastructure.
The funding is part of a bi-lateral agreement through the Investing in Canada plan, providing more than $11.8 billion over the next decade in federal funding dedicated to infrastructure projects. The projects supported through this agreement will have a total value of over $31 billion and will be cost-shared with the Ontario government, municipalities and other partners.
“This is a much needed boost that will help us advance our plans for public transit in Mississauga,” said Janice Baker, City Manager and Chief Administrative Officer. “The support of the federal and provincial governments is imperative to connecting our city, increasing transit capacity and building sustainable infrastructure as part of our Strategic Plan.”
