Atkinson Insurance. As Time Goes By!

There is something reassuring about the continuity that can exist in a small town.  To be able to go into a familiar store and know exactly where the item you need is located makes running such errands faster and less of a chore.  Developing that sort of knowledge can take time and in today’s marketplace of changing dynamics and new portals of access, the process can become confusing.  Finding a reliable guide can make all the difference between a disaster and a minor inconvenience.

A perfect example of this type of guidance continues to be demonstrated by one of the oldest family-run businesses in the area.  This year marks the 90th anniversary of W.N. Atkinson Insurance Limited, a fixture in the community operating out of their historic offices at 157 Queen St. South.

Founded in 1929 by Wix Atkinson, the business has grown and adapted with the changing times and industry demands.  At the time, Wix had a minor car accident in Toronto and decided that perhaps obtaining some insurance would be a good idea.  He approached the Dominion of Canada General Insurance Company and in turn, they asked if he would be interested in representing them in the Streetsville area as an agent.

Over the years the brokerage grew as new companies were signed up and clients added so that, in 1972, the business moved out of Wix’s home and into their current location.  Generations of family members, including the late Jon Clipperton, have come to work in the business and it is currently being run by his wife, Marie, her son Don, and son-in-law Todd Smith.

The staff of eight strives to take the pain out of obtaining insurance and making a claim.  While computers have streamlined some of the record-keeping demands, there is still a lot of paperwork involved and as brokers they have their clients best interests as their focus.  They make the process as straightforward as possible for their clients and that helpfulness extends well beyond the core business.

Volunteerism is a foundational component of their approach to business and they are supporters, if not driving forces behind numerous community-centred events and initiatives.  Their community spirit and belief in supporting families is evidenced by Atkinson’s involvement in a variety of initiatives from Jon’s helping found the Streetsville Derbys and his long-time involvement with the Streetsville Lions Club to helping with the organising of the Bread and Honey Festival.

As time goes by, such individual attention and care from a business is becoming increasingly rare.  It is by merit of this approach that Atkinson’s Insurance Limited has had their longevity and impact on the village of Streetsville.  How many companies these days can state they have a client that has been with them for over 80 years?
