As a transplant to Mississauga, one of the first things I set out to do was discover a pizzeria that I could call my own. Coming from a community and a family with a rich tradition of pizza, in a market saturated by pizza franchises I felt like I was searching for a diamond in the rough.

Thanks to advertisements along the Lakeshore West Go Train route, I discovered Amadio’s Pizza. Tucked away just minutes outside of Port Credit, but still very accessible, Amadio’s offered authenticity and a taste of home. You can tell the pizza is made with fresh ingredients and by someone who cares. It also has countless awards to its name.

Amadio’s Pizza won the bronze medal at the Toronto Star’s Pizza Olympics in 2010, the Best Pizza in Canada award in 2016, and year after year it finds itself amongst the best of best in readers’ choice awards. Its philanthropic work has also been recognized, having received the Pizza With Purpose award from Saputo Cheese in 2011.

After only a few visits, it became clear that owner-operator Joe Leroux is a pizza legend. A career that spans decades, Leroux has competed for the title of Canadian Pizza Chef of the Year three times and was the top ranking Canadian in the non-traditional category at the World Championships at the Vegas Pizza Expo in 2016.

Recently, Leroux was invited to participate in Trofeo Caputo 2019 in Naples, Italy, the birthplace of pizza. Considered to be “among the finest pizza makers North America has to offer,” by the company, he will be one of the elite American-style pizza makers who will compete in the category in its inaugural year at the competition.

Reflecting on the honour, Leroux noted, “To be invited to the Caputo Cup in Naples, Italy this September means the world to me because it is one of those things that I put on my bucket list that I wanted to see,” but to be invited to be a part of the competition is truly exciting.

Be sure to wish Joe luck as he sets out to represent Amadio’s Pizza, the City of Mississauga and Canada on the international pizza stage! Amadio’s Pizza is open Wednesday and Thursday from 4 p.m. until 10 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. until 10 p.m.
