ErinoakKids is Ontario’s largest children’s treatment centre, serving children and youth with physical and developmental disabilities.  The centre’s new 103,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility just opened on Central Parkway West, close to Mississauga’s neighbourhood of Erindale.

Services at the new facility include therapeutic playrooms, an audiology area for hearing aid fitting and dispensing, a gym, accessible playgrounds, an adapted fitness facility, serenity gardens, a family resource centre to support parents and caregivers, as well as a youth drop-in centre.

The facility also offers a Snoezelen room.  The name “Snoezelen” comes from the combination of two Dutch words “snuffelen (to snuggle) and “doezelen” (to doze; to snooze). This controlled multi-sensory environment was developed in the Netherlands, and is designed to help reduce anxiety and aggression in children with autism and developmental disabilities.

In essence, the new ErinoakKids facility is a one-stop treatment centre for children and youth.  It offers immeasurable help to Mississauga’s kids—as well as their parents—bravely coping with physical and developmental disabilities.

“ErinoakKids has single-handedly changed the way we support our children and our youth with disabilities and special needs right across the province,” said Mississauga Mayor Bonnie Crombie at the April 27th opening of the centre. “Mississauga families can now access therapy, medical and support services for their children all under one roof.”

“Opening this new Mississauga location is the most significant milestone in ErinoakKids history since opening our very first facility in Mississauga 40 years ago,” said Bridget Fewtrell, ErinoakKids president and CEO.  “Today, the design of our new Mississauga site and the opportunities it affords provides a place where children and youth can, for the first time, maximize their abilities in a space tailored to meet their needs.”

ErinoakKids board chair James Sutherland emphasized the significance of the new Mississauga centre in a press release:  “Whether its physiotherapy, occupational therapy, autism services or speech and language services, the new facility will provide children and youth with the resources they need to achieve lifelong success.”

Mississauga’s new ErinoakKids facility is located at 1230 Central Pkwy West.
