Streetsville used to be a mill and agricultural town surrounded by farms and wide open spaces. As the village has evolved over time and some of its distinctive quaintness becomes harder to see, it is refreshing to find a venture that harkens back to that earlier time. Family run furniture store Country Charm (t: 905 542-9333), located in the historic Ladner building at 220 Queen St South, is one such example.
This twenty-three year old business has its flagship store in Owen Sound and last April they opened their Streetsville location to provide high quality wood furniture built using Mennonite and Amish techniques to our ever growing local population.
On entering the store one is struck by the variety of styles ranging from traditional to 20th century modern, contemporary to innovative. Further, many of the pieces feature the live edge finish currently so popular with designers and those wishing to preserve some of the organic, natural curves and lines of the original tree. Part of the beauty of wood is that from species to species, from tree to tree, the life each has lived is exhibited in the grain making each piece truly unique.
In the artisanal crafting of their products, Country Charm uses domestically sourced wood (oak, maple, walnut, cherry, etc.) which they transform into everything from bedroom sets to harvest tables, ergonomic desks to occasional tables. Some of the more dramatic examples incorporate the individuality of the various trees; burls or knots or splits are refined and enhanced to attractive effect that need to be seen in person to fully appreciate.
Another characteristic that is highly evident is the quality of the construction. The joinery is solid, the stains and finishes uniform, the palette of colours available infinitely customisable. This is the type of furniture that can become a family heirloom passed down for generations.
It is this level of quality that fits with a trend in home furnishing. Rather than looking for disposable items customers are looking for durability, stylishness, and environmentally conscious production to compliment the high-tech nests being developed at home. Relative to the cost of the products at a big box furniture store it’s not as expensive as one might think to order a table or dresser that is custom-made to your specifications and is of much higher quality. Additionally, each item carries with it a lifetime guarantee so you know the craftsmen are proud of their work.
